Londres, Reino Unido.- El Gobierno británico calificó este lunes de «prometedora» la vacuna contra la covid-19 desarrollada por la farmacéutica estadounidense Pfizer y la firma alemana BioNTech, si bien expresó cautela al advertir de que «no hay garantías».
Pfizer comunicó este lunes que las pruebas clínicas de la fase 3 de la vacuna, la última antes de solicitar la aprobación de las autoridades reguladoras, muestran una eficacia superior al 90 %.
Un portavoz de Downing Street, la residencia oficial del primer ministro británico, Boris Johnson, dijo este lunes que el Reino Unido tiene comprometidas 40 millones de dosis de la vacuna.
«Los resultados son prometedores y, mientras somos optimistas por el avance, tenemos que recordar que no hay garantías», añadió.
Según Pfizer, el nivel de eficacia de la vacuna se ha logrado siete días después de la segunda dosis, es decir 28 días después del inicio de la vacunación, que tiene dos dosis.
Se espera que la empresa solicite la próxima semana la aprobación de las autoridades reguladoras, después de que la vacuna fuese probada en 43.500 personas en seis países.
Unas doce vacunas contra la covid-19 están en las pruebas clínicas finales en todo el mundo, entre ellas la que desarrollan la Universidad de Oxford y la farmacéutica AstraZeneca, pero la de Pfizer es la primera en comunicar sus resultados de la fase 3.
