El presidente de Estados Unidos, Joe Biden, prome­tió ayer jueves una movili­zación como “en tiempos de guerra” para hacer fren­te al covid-19, anuncian­do un endurecimiento de las normas sobre el uso de mascarilla y una cuarente­na obligatoria para los via­jeros que entren al país.

El mandatario demócrata dedicó su primera jornada de gobierno a su prioridad más urgente, la lucha contra la pandemia, en el país con más muertos por el covid-19.

Al firmar una serie de de­cretos, Biden anunció que “aquellos que viajen a Esta­dos Unidos desde otro país deberán realizarse una prueba antes de subirse al avión y realizar una cua­rentena cuando lleguen”.

La exigencia de una prue­ba ya había sido ordenada por el gobierno anterior, pero el aislamiento era só­lo una recomendación.

Nuevas cepas

Biden explicó que esta medida se debe a las nue­vas cepas del virus detec­tadas en otros países, en un momento en que en Estados Unidos hay más de 400.000 muertos por la pandemia, una cifra que su­pera la cantidad de solda­dos estadounidenses falle­cidos durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

El mandatario afirmó ade­más que va a asegurarse de que los científicos y los ex­pertos puedan trabajar li­bres de “cualquier interfe­rencia política y que puedan tomar sus decisiones ba­sados estrictamente en la ciencia”.

La nueva administración estadounidense agradeció ayer jueves a la Organiza­ción Mundial de la Salud (OMS) su papel de lideraz­go en la lucha contra la pan­demia y le aseguró su apoyo financiero, un giro de 180 grados respecto a la estrate­gia mantenida por el expre­sidente Donald Trump.

Estados Unidos, que anun­ció su regreso a la OMS el miércoles, “tiene la inten­ción de cumplir con sus obligaciones financieras con la organización”, ase­guró el inmunólogo An­thony Fauci en una reunión del consejo ejecutivo de la agencia de la ONU.
