WASHINGTON, EEUU.- El presidente saliente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, suspendió este martes la deportación de inmigrantes irregulares venezolanos por un periodo de 18 meses y, además, les concedió permisos temporales de trabajo.
Trump adoptó estas medidas en su último día en el poder, dado que este miércoles asumirá la Presidencia el demócrata Joe Biden, del que se esperaba que actuara con los venezolanos como finalmente ha procedido su antecesor.
En un comunicado de la Casa Blanca, Trump dijo que «la situación de deterioro dentro de Venezuela justifica el aplazamiento de la expulsión de los ciudadanos venezolanos que se encuentran presentes en los Estados Unidos».
El todavía mandatario consideró que su decisión, de la que se pueden beneficiar los que permanezcan en el país a 20 de enero, responde al «interés de política exterior de Estados Unidos».
La medida tiene algunas excepciones y no aplicará a las personas que hayan sido deportadas con anterioridad o que hayan sido condenadas de un crimen o dos delitos menores.
Además de ordenar la suspensión de las deportaciones, el todavía presidente aprobó «autorizaciones de empleo para extranjeros cuya expulsión haya sido aplazada (…) por la duración de dicho aplazamiento».
La decisión de Trump supone un guiño a la comunidad venezolana en Estados Unidos, en su mayoría residente en Florida, que le ha respaldado durante estos cuatro años por su beligerancia contra el Gobierno de Nicolás Maduro, aunque no ha pasado de ser insuficiente.
De hecho, este mismo martes Washington aprobó las enésimas sanciones económicas contra Caracas, esta vez para miembros de una supuesta red cuyo objetivo era comercializar crudo venezolano evadiendo las penalizaciones estadounidenses.
Desde su llegada a la Casa Blanca en 2017, el Gobierno de Trump ha impuesto numerosas rondas de sanciones económicas contra el Ejecutivo de Maduro, al que considera «ilegítimo».
EEUU ha sido uno de los aliados más fieles del líder opositor venezolano Juan Guaidó, al que en 2019 reconoció como presidente legítimo de la nación caribeña.
El Gobierno de Venezuela espera que la nueva Administración del demócrata Joe Biden, quien asumirá la Presidencia de EEUU mañana, miércoles, tenga «atisbos de decencia», cumpla con el derecho internacional y establezca «canales diplomáticos de diálogo respetuoso»
