Así lo afirmó Erik Holmbom, director de obra de Ocean Cleanup (el organismo detrás del Interceptor 004) en el país, quien explicó el vital rol que ocupó la Armada en el desarrollo del programa.
Holmbom afirmó que la Armada les brindó ayudas de múltiples formas, como la facilitación de personal, botes y seguridad, así como la disposición de abrir el “puente flotante” de la capital cuando sea necesario, y los permisos necesarios para laborar durante el horario del toque de queda.
Otro que resaltó la labor de la referida entidad fue Dan van der Kooy, productor senior de video de Ocean Cleanup, quien ha documentado todos los pasos de elaboración del Interceptor 004, desde su construcción hasta sus “primeros pasos”.
“La Armada ha sido grande, para mí han sido las estrellas. Digo, verlos enfrentar el proyecto, adueñarse de él. Están pintando a Interceptor… están usando uniformes que dicen ‘Interceptor 004’”, explicó van der Kooy en el episodio “After Curfew” del podcast de Ocean Cleanup, “Catching Up”.
Asimismo, resaltaron los aportes del Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo en República Dominicana (PNUD), indicando que a través de ellos obtuvieron varios contactos para el proyecto.
A futuro
A pesar de que la mencionada embarcación ya “está lista, funcionando y recogiendo basura” en el Río Ozama, después de una pausa ocasionada por el huracán Laura, Holmbom ya tiene trazado las metas para el 2022.
“Vamos a parar toneladas de desperdicios antes de que lleguen al océano”, aseguró, agregando que de igual forma se enfocarán en “perfeccionar lo que ya está puesto en funcionamiento”.
También expresó que otro objetivo es trabajar en el aspecto del manejo de los desperdicios, para lograr un mayor impacto ecológico.
