El grupo finlandés Nokia anunció este lunes que fabricará para la Nasa la primera red de telefonía móvil operativa en la Luna, una iniciativa realizada para el proyecto de implantar una base humana permanente de la agencia espacial estadounidense.
Esta red 4G, «ultracompacta, eficiente a nivel energético y resistente a las condiciones espaciales», representará «la primera red de telefonía móvil en la Luna», aseguró Nokia en un comunicado.
El grupo finlandés precisó que la red estará instalada en la superficie del astro a partir de finales de 2022, a través de un alunizador en el que trabaja la empresa estadounidense Intuitive Machines.
La Nasa confirmó a la AFP que será la primera red de telefonía móvil en la Luna, donde el ser humano puso los pies por ultima vez en 1972.
El contrato, de un total de 14,1 millones de dólares, fue concedido a la filial estadounidense de Nokia, que se hizo con toda una serie de proyectos punteros anunciados el viernes por la Nasa.
«El sistema permitirá asegurar las comunicaciones en la superficie de la Luna en grandes distancias, a una mayor velocidad y de forma más fiable que los estándares actuales», explicó la agencia espacial en su comunicado.
Dos astronautas estadounidenses, entre ellos una mujer, partirán hacia la Luna en 2024 bajo la misión Artemisa 3, con la que la Nasa quiere instalar una base humana permanente en el astro, una operación previa a otra posible misión hacia Marte.
